Archival Photoprints

Most of the Sacred Light Gallery images are available in several sizes of Photoprints.

Archival Photoprints are photographic reproductions printed one by one on Fuji Crystal Archival or Lumira paper by the great folks at Fine Print and are said to last without fading 50 -100 years*. *prints to be out of direct sunlight in normal lighting conditions.

The technology that produced these prints is fading fast. The images are pre-digital. This means that the image will not pixalate under a magnifying glass. The photographic eye can see many more colors than the 60,000 or so available to the digital world. When these archival prints are gone, there will be no more available.

Ecoprints

Ecoprints are printed with soy ink on hemp  or tree free paper. They are signed. They are color rich, but should be kept out of direct sunlight. The image is centered in a white border. They come in an crystal clear wraps with tree free backing.

They are a great way to have a larger print inexpensively.

Almost every culture has a mythos of lovers
who have transcended their normal earthly stay.
Overlooking a beautiful bay, high atop a windswept cliff,
two trees are affectionately embracing each other.
Their roots mix and trail deep into the land.
A small waterfall finds it way down to the soft velvet bay.

What is the relationship between individual freedom and “State Security”? Is freedom an illusion; a false sense of of liberty stretched over the State Security Apparatus? The social contract implies that the government is there to protect the citizens from evil-doers among us. But what if the security forces are controlled by those who do not care about the citizens, and only their profits? What do the citizens do now?

Illusion of Reality.

Illusion of Reality

Oil on Canvas

Most of us who were raised in the 60’s and 70’s, have been here done that
or knew someone who had been there done that.
We may have visited someone like this poor soul.

In a shabby room, in any big city, a broken man lies dead or near death.
From his pipe, a vision of what all mankind seeks wafts towards the ceiling.
Paradise, the face of a woman, brotherhood, harmony with nature and spirit, the heart of human existence is but a vision.
His table is filled with a cornucopia of escape mechanisms, anything to quash the pain of existence.
A nuclear bomb goes off on the TV set, as the newspaper proclaims the next war.
The toxic environment was not the drug of his choice.
The room overlooks a desolate urban nightmare. Pollution hangs over a garish street scene.
Ladies of the night stand on the corner; cops roust folks on the opposite street as
Krishna devotees sing their mantras hoping to bring a bit of divinity to the situation.
In the hotel across the way, an artist peers through his window.
In rooms nearby, various people escape in their own ways from their collective self-created miseries.

It’s our war on us.Man tries to control the pleasure and misery of his fellowman.
Those most out of control seek to control others.

Land of the Free, Home of the Brave

Oil on Canvas

The weapons broker plays with his money and weapon toys,
his desk forming the TV that lulls the American family into its illusions.
Keeping our standard of living oiled at all costs, the media perpetuates the lie
by playing clips of a “Smart Bomb” hitting enemy targets.
Daughter preens Barbie complete with sports car,
soon to become like Mom stuffing herself with junk food and apple pie.
Pop downs his beer shaking his fist in approval while Sonny practices war games with his GI Joe.
Oil fires split the canvas and light the horizon of death.
Tanks blast away at anything that moves. This part of the war never makes it to the TV set.
In reality, everybody looses. People die, animals die, the earth dies, our kids die.
There is no honor, no winners in a war.
There are no “Smart” bombs.

This painting goes in and out of fashion.
Wars are so short now, Mark started this piece when Desert Storm I,
our war with Iraq in 1991 began. He was still painting it when Desert Storm, ended.
Unfortunately, several more similar stupid wars have come and gone since that time.
He painted it in a direct response to a leftover old tank being driven down our street in California
to rally support for the war effort.
When the zealot Army drivers turned the gun turret towards our home, Mark wanted to stop the parade by jumping in front of the tank with a rose, like the brave student in Tienemin Square in China.
Fortunately, the tank caused its own demise. Clouds of thick black smoke belched from its rear. This scared the horses that were trailing behind it.The horses scared a troupe of tiny tap-dancers that were behind them. The entire parade self-destructed.
Ten years later, the same dreadful repetition. Now we know that our kids are dying from “depleted” Uranium sickness, Gulf War syndrome,
and that’s just the garbage weaponry.
The real weapons we can’t even talk about.
The solution: Begin to circulate in your local area a non-nuclear proliferation treaty.
Where do you think these bombs are made anyway?

Oil on Canvas

A soul is taking a leap into the face of life and death.
The left part of the face is skeletal in its depths; the right is full and abundant.
Because the soul has taken the leap, life ethereally embraces him.
On the left is all that reminds one of the harshness of nature
as it decomposes and sinks back into its components.
We fear the many faces of death.
On the right the decay has been transformed into new verdant life.
The Transformation is continual.
Below, a new soul is forming, taking sustenance from the life/death source.
blissfully unaware that the variety of expression will be so extreme.
Sometimes we must take a Leap of Faith,
as there is nothing else that can be done.
The rewards are great, as the second you let go of the fear,
life embraces you, and shows you her infinite bounty.

MARCH OF PROGRESS.

March of Progress

Oil on canvas
48 inches x 56 inches
©1995

This is perhaps Mark Henson’s most popular political piece and the saddest.
It reflects the deep-seated awareness of impending global disaster that touches all of our hearts, and yet we feel so helpless before “The March of Progress”.

A woman with child flees in terror from the monster. The animals panic before the bloodshot eyes and weapon’s scope.A man in a suit giving the peace sign, nuclear power plants as antennas stand on top the monster’s head.Death masks of toxic waste and poisons spew from a missile studded face.Mindless military tanks herd corporate clear cutting loggers towards the garbage filled beach
as a whale lies bleeding on the sand.Fiery nuclear mushroom clouds fill the sky
as attack jets fly over glow in the darkened seats of global government. The entire monster forms a dollar sign, capitalism, greed, materialism
devoid of anything but primal survival dynamics run amok.We are our worst enemy. The sacrifice is enormous, the unnecessary suffering immense, the tools are in the hands of madmen, caught in cycles of fear.
This thinking comes from memory patterns that are not valid anymore.
There is nothing “out there” that can get us.
We have killed everything that could already.
The solution: Be kind to our friends the animals, and reach beyond being only animal.
Show compassion to all our earthly cohabitants.

This image reveals our most materialistic nature. We export illusion. We will kill to do this. There is something extremely wrong. Run for office! Vote! Recycle! Boycott sweatshop products and all tools of violence. Have compassion for our planet and global family. There are good people everywhere.

The source of creation spews forth millions of forms of life,
each unique,each capable of reproduction.
The secret of divine creation is activated by love, passion and desire.
We are all of this.
The immortal aspects are the source permeating our being.
We feel the richness through time and space.
Our freedoms expand as we include all life.
We come and go, appear and disappear
as we choose to identify with a limited viewpoint of one thing or another.

Rarely do we have a chance in our civilized world to experience the awesome power of planetary forces in the act of creation.
The eye is drawn to the lava pouring into the ocean, hissing, until it slows,
then lies still on the ocean floor. The beachfront is rough; the area is too new to draw sand.
The jungle creeps to edge of every cliff. A river of fire trails back to the volcano, smoke and mists obscuring the fiery damage.
The air is thick with ash, yet colored in the same rich hues.
A tiny figure peers over the cliff on the left dwarfed by the massiveness of nature. This land is completely alive.

She glides effortlessly across the sand towards the ocean, naked, beautiful, arms outstretched greeting the wind and curling surf. The colors of the setting tropical sun bathe her body in gold. There is one more dance to be done before this sun sets. The water will be cool to the touch. She becomes the ocean.

Washington D.C. never looked so serene.
The capital mall is flooded with water as the oceans rise.
Rather than a tortured future, we have  succeeded in getting over the necessity of perpetual trauma.
A camper fishes from the Washington Monument while ships sail up the mall.

A golden purple couple take part in the Sacrament of Love.
The radiant Phoenix Sunset showers them with evening colors.
The beak of the Phoenix curves right above the setting orb,
the wings and tail feathers radiate to the edge of evening.
The couple is in bliss,
their faces forming a Yin Yang of complimentary opposites.
The curves of the muscles on the man’s shoulders
and back lead you to the curves of the bay.
Life is perfect if only for a moment.
The day sacrifices itself like a Phoenix
so the next day can be born.
The couple sacrifices their separateness
so their union can be formed.

Temple Transmutation

Oil on Canvas

Inspiration for this work comes from the beautiful Tantric Temples of Khajuraho and Konarak in India.
Mark wanted to do a study of this sacred style of sculpture.
He was contemplating what makes something natural and when it becomes unnatural.
This is a very large canvas, this small screen barely does it justice.
The many classical Asanas, (poses) create a dance of balance in the sensual outward joyful expression of the Divine Union of all people, places and things.
The Cyber-jungle on the right was inspired by several computers in pieces lying on Mark’s studio floor.
The primary jungle on the left is inspired by many walks in Nature.
The psychedelic dinosaur bones become the deep core of our evolutionary blueprint.
Our vision of absolute connectivity in cyberspace is now being realized as we participate.
We are manifest between our beginnings in the primordial mud of jungles and the cyberdust of our future.

The image forms on a screen, but where is it really?
Where does the inspiring thought live?
Revealed one day in the mind of an artist,
then semi-immortalized on canvas,
then electrified in cyberspace.
We are all temporarily Immortal, or perhaps Immortally temporary.

The treadmill keeps on turning powered by desire.
The rich drink champagne as man chases his dreams, be it the “Origin of the World”,
painted by the French artist Gustave Courbet in 1866,
the perfect home, riches, fancy cars, food, running till his life blood is drained,
becoming the fodder for the next fool.
The wheel of fortune rolls on.
We can make all our lives richer by stewarding the earth protecting life
or be attached by umbilical cord to a life of mindless consumption.

What ever happened to  the Occupy Movement? We have been in one war or another for hundreds of years, discarding our our soldiers when our government is done with them. They were the best and the bravest, serving at the whim of our country, now homeless, on the streets. A  vet and his companion cat, willing to work for food appear despondent . We have brief moments of hope when somehow the people seem united in goodness, followed by many years of broken promises to those who cared enough to be in harms way.  Politicians roll on in sleek limousines, trendy fashionistas ignore the the leftovers of a generation that went to war to preserve the rich.

The woman is about to enter into a state of communion with the source of all beingness.
As she passes into the light,
voices of doubt and fear make one more attempt
to direct her thoughts elsewhere.
What if there is no love?
What if there is no caring?
Will I be left out?
As the light comes closer and closer,
the unresolved “Inner Voices” fade,
drawing her through the door of consciousness,
into the love that was there all the time.
